Our Chicken life!

We are based in the Cotswolds, in Broadway, a very pretty village.   I live with my husband and our little boy. We all love animals and have a variety of pets, including our chickens!

A few years ago, we decided to get a 'few' chickens as we loved the idea of having fresh eggs everyday!  So I bought a nice little starter coop and bought my first 3 chickens.  I had no idea what I wanted so I bought a Silkie, a Pekin and a Light Sussex - all bantams.  Then we found out that our Silkie was indeed a boy!!  So after a little debating we decided to get another silkie for him!  We used to let them out everyday and left them out all the time even when we were out.

Then one day I came home to find Id been struck by the fox!  I was devistated!  So much so I threw out there eggs Id collected because I didnt want to eat them.

A few days later I had an idea to incubate them, although, by then the eggs were in the wheelie bin!!!!  I thought that Id just give it a go.... you never know I thought, and Id never incubated any eggs before so I just thought Id go for it!

Well ..... all six hatched and I couldnt believe it!   Ive never looked back since!

I now have quite a number of chickens!

I really enjoy Pekins which are my favorite as they can be so very tame.  This is little black Pekin Cockerel called 'Squeak'  (both pics) - I literally broke him out of his egg and spent  a number of days as 'mum' to him to nursing him through a very tough time - he had splayed legs and a couple of times I though he would die!!

Happy Birthday Squeak! He was ONE on the 9th August!!

I can remember every hatch Ive done and take great care over all my chickens, from 'hatch' they all get probiotics in there drink to give them a helping start.  As they get older they live on a varied diet of pellets plus, porridge in the winter, salad leaves in the summer, also lots of scraps.  They free range in our garden to pick up grubs etc, but only when we are about, im not taking that chance again!!

Sad News
17th August -

We have to announce some sad news, weve just lost our Scotts Dumpy of 2years, I came home on Sunday to find that she had, had a serious prolapse which we tried to correct, however  she was well at all and so we took the hard decision that she was in a lot of pain and was better off if we put her out of her misery.
Sorry 'Dumpy' RIP xx

August

Well weve done quite a few hatches this year, my incubator havent been off long enough to cool down!! We are concentrating on Pekins & Silkies as usual.
Sometimes you do everything right to the book and it just doesnt happen! Oh well weve just filled up our incubator again and so fingers crossed well have success!

Hybrids

Well we are constantly being asked 'have you got any normal chickens?' So we have found a fantastic supplier of Lohman hens we will be able to get these this summer along with some other hybrid type's like bluebelles and sussex.  These are very hardy little birds and fantastic layers - they make lovely pets.  Some people like to have purebreeds for the colours and characters, however they can be costly and you wont get as many eggs.  These Lohmans will do exactly what it says on the tin! and give you lots of pleasure too!

So if you are after layers get intouch.  I can also get larger numbers
discount on more than 4 birds, and further discount on more than 10.

If you need any help or advise please get intouch Im always happy to help a fellow chicken keeper, new or old! EMAIL ME
